Signature Painting One of one; signed by Curtis Bullock
Why I made this: I frequently describe my work as a 'visual sudoku' in which I play with colors and patterns in a very systematic way. I've been painting in this style since 2019, mostly on bicycles, and I'm really enjoying translating those ideas into flatwork.
In this particular composition, a few round, bubble shapes float into the space, interacting with each other in ways that I haven't explored in my previous work. I also usually divide a composition into many more pieces, sometimes as many as 70 or 80, but in this case, I decided to see what could happen if I devoted the space to larger sections of color and pattern.
Living with this piece: The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
