Why I made this:
On the walk to my wife's studio in Milan, we always pass a little green Fiat Panda Young from the mid-80's or so. I loved the contrasting fonts, shifting between the chunky heft of 'Panda' and the lighter playfulness of 'young'. The red dots in the background are a reference to Pimpa, a very much beloved dog in Italian children's books.

I particularly like the dots because they were a spontaneous addition as the idea came to me in the middle of the process. With my other work, the placement of all the colors and patterns is very strictly planned out in advance, and I almost never deviate from it once I start working. In my renderings, I felt like it would look good either way - dots or no dots - but the chance to improvise and take a little side trip was too alluring.

From a technical standpoint, this painting was really interesting to produce. My vinyl cutter has a maximum cutting size of 12" X 24", which meant that I had to design separate vinyl cuts that could be laid down to produce a single, seamless application on a painting of this size. I suppose the testament to the success of the solutions I found is that I can't even find the seams where I placed the separate pieces of vinyl. It might be something that only I would notice, but it's something that I'm proud of.

Living with this piece:
The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
