Why I made this:
Filling the edges of my schoolwork with little shapes and symbols and designs is something I've done since I was very young, and this small series is an exploration of how those shapes might translate into paint form.
Dialing in the line weights and spacing and color saturation to paint a piece of notebook paper was actually a fun and unique design task for me because almost all of my work is abstract and not directly representational. Painting a piece of notebook paper - an object that people know really, really well - gave me a nice opportunity to use my powers of observation in a new way.
Not sure if there will be more of these mugs coming in the future, but this little group of three feels like a nice bridge between the art of my youth and the art I produce now.
Living with this piece:
The smooth, satiny clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
Technical details & care:
Vacuum insulated stainless steel for hot or cold temperature retention
Clear lid prevents big spills
Individually painted and sealed with a matte clear coat
Drinking surface and handle of the mug remain MiiR's factory applied powder coat
As you use the mug, any harder edges around the perimeter of the painting will soften slightly
Hand washing will provide the longest lasting finish
