Why I made this: I saw a really cool paint process where soap is used for masking between layers of paint, and I really wanted to try it. Almost all of my work relies on super clean, crisp lines, so this drip style could have been a fun contrast to that.
The trick, I learned, was in how the piece gets washed after the second layer of paint goes down on top of the soap. It needs to come off quickly so that it doesn't just roll over the whole surface, but if you blast it off with too much water pressure, it can create a bit of texture on the surface of the piece. Interesting to explore, and obviously a major contrast to what I normally produce.
I used this technique a few times with the first run of Wikieup Cactus pieces I made back in 2023, but I haven't found places to work it into my style since. These bottles were the practice pieces in that exploration, and now they are available at a chill, accessible price.
Living with this piece: The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
