Why I made this:
These are truly some of the first things I ever painted back in 2020 or so. I started painting on water bottles that were more of a wine bottle shape because the little taper at the neck and the curving edge around the bottom were very helpful analogs for the especially challenging areas to paint on a bike. Plus! Those bottles came from Goodwill, so I could get a lot of them really easily and really cheap.
When I wanted to work on a more consistent surface, I bought a case of MiiR bottles on eBay and got to work playing around with what I could do with a cleaner, simpler shape. One of the ideas that came to mind at that time was that the bottle could look like a big, cartoon cigarette - especially with steam from a hot beverage coming out of it.
The 'Filter Up' option puts the orange at the top. When you drink from it, you'll look like you have a giant, cartoon cigarette in your hand. The 'Filter Down' option puts the red at the top. When steam comes off of a hot beverage, it will look like a giant, smoking cigarette.
I only had 20 bottles to work with at the time, so I only made a few pieces, but they were the first steps towards the scaling and playfulness and repetition that typify my work today.
Living with this piece:
The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
