Camera 4 Painting
One of one; signed by Curtis Bullock
Why I made this:
When I moved to Italy, signage was one of the first things I spent a lot of time paying attention to. What does this sign even mean? What's allowed? What's not? Is this place open or closed? Can I park here? (Which is a question Milanese never ask themselves, by the way)
One thing I noticed was that signs indicating the presence of a security camera were especially ubiquitous. In Milan, those signs are absolutely everywhere. Interestingly, when I started looking for those signs in other cities and other countries, I noticed the huge variety of designs. I started taking pictures of the signs, and I pretty quickly amassed a collection of well over 100 unique cameras. This one, Camera 4, became one of my favorites because the big eye is so expressive, and the lines and shapes lend themselves perfectly to my paint process.
This 8" X 10" painting is the first of two full quality renderings of Camera 4 at this size. The larger 24" X 18" version of Camera 4 was really successful, so there may not be further 8" X 10" pieces coming along in the future.
Living with this piece:
The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
If your 'eye-crometer' is as dialed in as mine, you might notice that the camera feels ever so slightly tilted on the art board. It is and it isn't. When I measure very carefully, there is a difference of 2mm, but, strangely, I think the composition itself makes it seem off by much more than that.
