Why I made this:
Staying curious, keeping my eyes open and scanning for things that could turn into something is an essential part of how I exist in the world. I love capturing patterns and shapes in unexpected places, and I found the airplane at the core of this painting while pawing through the 'this-and-that' at a vintage store. As I played with the airplane in my design software, the variety of effects I could derive from different color combinations and different repetitious arrangements really fascinated me. I chose this particular composition and these particular colors because I like the range of 3D effects I see when I blur or sharpen the focus of my eyes.
Producing this painting was a very unique technical challenge for me; the precision required is something that I don't typically explore in my other work. Each individual airplane was laid down very carefully, like tiling a floor, starting from a corner and then managing any gaps or imperfections as I traveled across the piece. Once the first layer of vinyl and color was done, I had to unmask the entire painting and start the entire process again to lay the second, offset layer.
One of the things I like the most about this painting is getting really, really close to it. Tracking one small detail of the airplane across the painting - a window, the landing gear, the propeller - to see how close to perfect I got as I laid down the pattern. It's not perfect to the millimeter, but it's surprisingly close for two layers of offset tiles.
Living with this piece:
The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
