Why I made this:
When I moved to Italy, signage was one of the first things I spent a lot of time paying attention to. What does this sign even mean? What's allowed? What's not? Is this place open or closed? Can I park here? (Which is a question Milanese never ask themselves, by the way)

One icon that especially caught my eye was the SOS button in my mother in-law's elevator. Partly because I liked it and partly because I perceived a not-insignificant risk that the elevator could get stuck, and we might actually need it. The retro-y, analog phone was a shape I fell in love with, and I knew that I wanted to make a painting with it.

406 Phones, at 60" X 30", is the largest painting I have produced to this point. The art production process for this pieces was both really interesting and really challenging; it's made like a massive screenprint with 16 colors on each of the two layers.

This many color combinations might make some people's eyes cross. For me, that's exactly what I like about it. Almost every color combination on the painting repeats, and I like the way I lose track of what I'm looking for as my eyes move across the piece. Was I looking for pink over blue or blue over pink? If I can let go in that moment and stop trying to hold onto what was, I can find myself taken in by the joy of another color combination.

Living with this piece:
The matte clear coat feels really good under the fingers, but the texture of the paint still stands out just a little bit. If you've always wanted to touch the art in a museum, you're really going to love this feature of my work.
